General Description

The capacity auction system is designed to provide explicit bilateral and multilateral capacity auctions as well as coordinated explicit load-flow based capacity auctions. Further the system has a market coupling module (implicit auctions) included, i.e. it has the possibility to include order books from power exchanges into the clearing procedure.

Within the system there are several modules in addition to the different auction modules. Additionally to the modules shown below in Figure 1, there is another module for scheduling support. Although these modules should be seen as an entity, all of them can be run separately.

Currently test platforms for analysing the impact of implementing coordinated load-flow based explicit auctions are used by the South-East European (SEE) TSOs and the Central-East European (CEE) TSOs. These platforms are publicly available in the link area. In the SEE region international electricity traders take part in a so-called dry-run to evaluate the principles and work and data flows of a coordinated load-flow based explicit auction. Additionally the system is internally used by Verbund–Austrian Power Grid AG and by swissgrid to analyse different scenarios in the European electricity market.

Further the bilateral capacity auctions of Verbund-Austrian Power Grid AG are managed by riecado.
